The grade fives of Weenen Primêr were abuzz as they arrived at Sam-Lyn Edu Centre last Monday morning dressed in casual gear.
This surprise outing had them guessing even when given boarding passes to climb onto an aeroplane.
Due to the cost of a visit to a real airport or anywhere else for that matter, the Centre offered something different that would impact the children, outside the confines of a classroom.
The seating inside Sam-Lyn Edu Centre was set up like the seating in an aeroplane with blankets on the seats and a cosy atmosphere to emulate the inside of an aeroplane.
The children entered one at a time and were shown to their seats by the “Air Steward” . They were then told to imagine that the screen in front of them with a Power Point presentation was the screen on the aeroplane.
They fastened their seatbelts for take –off and were given a taste of what it is like travelling in an aeroplane. The grade fives watched in awe as they were taken through the steps of planning a holiday such as budgeting, passports, how to get there and what clothing to take.
Their trip was to Zanzibar, part of Tanzania, which is the country that they learn about in social science. They were shown maps as well as tourist destinations such as a Spice Farm, Stone Town, Prison Island and the Slave Museum.
They were also served juice off a trolley by the “Air Steward” while watching the Power Point. They were then treated to traditional Tanzanian Buns and cake to round off this exciting adventure. According to one of the children – it was just “perfect”!
