Choir gives back to the less fortunate
They were treated to lunch and sweets, and got to enjoy a performance from the choir

A Ladysmith Gazette journalist had the opportunity to go to the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School on Wednesday last week.
School executor head Andrew Stead celebrates his birthday on August 28 and due to this, the Stead Legacy Project was born.
As part of the project, the school will be giving back to the community. Although the school relies mainly on businesses to sponsor the children, as not all of them are able to receive bursaries, they still want to give back and did so on Wednesday when they had less fortunate children visit.
These are children who come from troubled backgrounds. They were treated to lunch and sweets, and got to enjoy a performance from the choir. A lot of them are from other cities and towns. Head boy Lengana Mashaphu is all the way from Johannesburg and said that, in the beginning, he found it difficult to be there, but now he loves it and sees it as his second home.
The pupils at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School all have a passion for music and are groomed to be real gentlemen. In order for them to make it into the choir, each learner has to pass 25 exams before having to sing a solo for the whole school. The other learners then decide whether or not the boy becomes a part of the choir or has to solo again.
Many may think that music is the only thing they focus on… However, the boys take all the usual subjects at school as well. Every Wednesday, they put on an afternoon show and the Ladysmith Gazette journalist attended it.
The first half of the show was soft and from a lot of English composers, while the second half started with a bang and had the boys giving it their all in an African medley, also showing off their gumboot dancing skills.
These boys love to entertain and to give back to the community, be it in the form of song or charity.
