Mnikathi gives ‘go-ahead’ to repair faulty pump

A FAULTY pump at the sewage treatment works, which has been out of commission for approximately three months, is finally being repaired.

After three months of sewage flowing into Klipfontein and a disturbing lack of concern for the matter from the relevant municipal departments, a bold move by civil rights organisation, AfriForum has finally led to action being taken to implement the necessary repairs.

On August 19, AfriForum contacted Blue Seal Engineering in Newcastle for a quote to repair the faulty pump. As non-payment by AbaQulusi Municipality has been a widely reported issue in recent times, AfriForum undertook to provide payment, which amounted to almost R32 000-00, if necessary, to ensure that the job would be done.

According to the Chairman of AfriForum in Vryheid, Andrè Van Der Walt, when he approached Acting Municipal Manager, Bongiwe Mnikathi, stating AfriForum’s intentions to bear the expense of the repairs and invoice the municipality thereafter, Mnikathi responded by ensuring him that she would arrange payment by AbaQulusi Municipality and AfriForum’s intervention would not be necessary.

Van Der Walt further stated that Mnikathi went so far as to arrange an order number, which allowed the contractor to continue with the repairs.
