New leadership elected for Newcastle

Civic Hall was packed to capacity on Wednesday morning during the inaugural municipal council meeting. Municipal Manager, Errol Mswane, opened the event with a vote of thanks to outgoing councillors.

He said they had served the community with distinction. As a token of appreciation, he handed certificates of recognition to each of them.

Jabulile Khumalo and Sam Mlangeni were nominated for the position of Newcastle Council Speaker.

Cllr Khumalo was elected for the position by ANC majority vote, whereafter opposition parties opted to abstain from the voting process.

With no dissentient votes, Duduzile Sibiya was elected as Deputy Mayor, and Grace Nguni as Chief Whip. Mqapheleni Ngcobo was given the position of spearheading the Municipal Public Accounts Committee.

Councillors Makhosini Nkosi, Duduzile Sibiya, Matthew Shunmugam, Rueben Molelekoa, Nkosinathi Zwane, Vuselwa Bam, Bebsie Cronje and Shadrak Thwala were elected to the Executive Committee.

Incoming Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi, concluded the day’s events by thanking the ANC leadership for putting their trust in his leadership skills. However, he reminded councillors of their duties.
