Beware the ‘jewellery thieving masseuse’

Unbeknown to them, the woman removed their thali chains

Masquerading as a salesperson, with an earnest pitch, a woman nicked jewellery from a family’s home last week. Described as being modestly clad in a dress over pants and her hair covered by a scarf, the woman approached a family in Bougainvillea Avenue under the pretence of selling pain-relief bracelets.

The family welcomed the woman into their home and allowed her to speak about her product. The sales pitch then went from verbal to physical when the woman suggested a shoulder massage for two of the women from the house.

Unbeknown to them, the woman removed their thali chains (a holy gold thread containing gold that is worn by Tamil brides). Minutes later, the woman announced that she needed something from her car, which was parked outside. She did not return…

Growing suspicious, the family realised that they had been robbed. A family member said that the two women were unaware of how their thali chains were removed; neither did they remember the registration number of the vehicle. He urges residents to be vigilant about whom they allow into their homes, and not to be deceived by smooth-talking con artists.

To report any suspicious activity, call the Estcourt police on 036 342 9525.
