How you can ‘ace’ your trial exams

The days you are not writing are not off days: Use these days to study...

A lot of schools started writing trials this week. As a Grade 12 pupil, the thought of adult life may scare you and you might be concerned about what to do next year, but don’t focus on that right now. Besides, you first have to pass your matric before you do anything else, so focus on the exams!

Here are a few tips to help you ‘ace’ your trial exams and finals:

• Plan a study roster: You may not think it helps, but it does.

• Make sure you get enough rest: Sleep at least six hours a night.

• The days you are not writing are not off days: Use these days to study.

• Make sure to study in a quiet area, with no distractions.

• Make sure you have everything you need before studying so you don’t have to stand up and break your concentration.

• By now, you should have a method of studying, whether you remember all the info by reading it aloud, having someone read it to you, rewriting everything or making use of colours. Do not change your method now, as long as it works for you.

• Have a glass of water with you to keep hydrated.

• Eat before studying so you are not hungry and have all the energy you need.

• If you prefer studying with music, make sure the music does not have vocals (lyrics) and is not repetitive, as your attention will then be drawn to the music and away from the work at hand.

• Do not study for hours on end: Take regular breaks and go for a walk outside.

Most importantly, stay calm during the exam. Read through your paper before getting started and if you get stuck by a question, leave a space for it and answer it later. Write neatly and clearly, and make sure you have everything you need to write your exam.

Good luck, matrics of 2016!
