Afrimat Gladiators pack a punch in the first round

THE first round of T20 league matches started last weekend at Cecil Emmett Park.

Saturday’s match was called off due to inclement weather and two matches were played on Sunday.

The morning match was played between King Super Stars and the Afrimat Gladiators. King Super Stars won the toss and elected to bat first on a good batting wicket, thanks to Bo’s Tool Hire, who lent the club a roller, and posted 142/9 in their 20 overs. Safdar Iqbal (23) and K Ahmed (21) were their top scorers. The best bowling figures for the Gladiators came from their young debutante, Tiaan Marais (4-0-22-4), and stalwart Wessel Vorster (4-0-21-2).

In batting, the Gladiators’ openers paced a great run chase and reached the target in the 17th over with both Adriaan Kruger and Andrew Vorster, scoring 81 and 42 respectively, not out. Imran Anwar (4-0-17-0) was the most economical bowler for King Super Stars. The Afrimat Gladiators won the match by 10 wickets and dedicate their win to the late Chris Cloete.

Newcomers, eMondlo, faced Dumbe in the afternoon game. Dumbe batted first and amassed a good 240/2 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to superb batting from Leon Solms (107 not out) and Keegen Meier (66 not out). The best bowler for eMondlo was Tshenge Zoba (4-0-38-1).

eMondlo, in their batting innings, were dismissed for 79 runs with V Ntambo (22) and B Ndlalazi (15) being their top scorers. Dumbe’s best bowlers were Rupert Beneke (2-0-5-2) and Juan Freyer (3-0-11-1). Dumbe won the match by 7 wickets.
