The Mayor of Newcastle, Makhosini Nkosi, accompanied by officials of the municipal Development Planning and Human Settlements Department, attended the 2016 Govan Mbeki Awards ceremony, hosted recently by MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Ravi Pillay at the Durban International Convention Centre.

The Newcastle Municipality was the first runner-up, together with eThekwini Municipality, for Best Level 2 Accredited Municipality. uMhlathuze Municipality took the first place.
Newcastle Municipality was awarded Level 2 housing accreditation status in September 2012, tasking it with the responsibility for programme management and subsidy administration.
This encompasses project evaluation and approval, contract administration, subsidy registration, programme management, including cash flow projection and management and technical (construction) quality assurance.
The municipality again won the provincial Govan Mbeki award as the best Level 2 Accredited Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal in 2013. Later that year, the municipality was named the best Level 2 Accredited Municipality at national level at the Prestigious Awards event at the Gallagher Estate.

The municipality prides itself in putting people first and serving the community thorough implementing Batho Pele principles. It also ensures that housing projects are fast tracked with the objective of providing adequate, sustainable and comfortable housing opportunities.
