Eqhweni Combined School held an Arbor Day Read-a-thon. The theme was ‘No trees, no paper. No paper, no reading.” The day started very well as there were many activities.

Learners were expected to take part in activities such as poems, reading, drama, storytelling and entertainment. The purpose was to promote the importance of reading and also encourage learners to read. As the theme was based on trees, the school wanted learners to understand the importance of trees and plants.

What was most fascinating about this day was that learners got the opportunity not only to present their activities but also to compose their own work. Teachers were delighted to see up and coming learners who did very well. All the grades took part in this activity starting from pre-grade R to grade nine.

This was also a chance for the Language Festival Committee to scoop up some learners for next year’s competition. The school would like to thank all teachers who prepared the learners and also the Principal Mr ES Ndlazi who was always present during planning.

One can than summarise by saying: “A reading nation is indeed a winning nation”.
