MM goes AWOL

ACTING municipal manager, Bongiwe Mnikathi, was a no-show at the AbaQulusi council meeting held last Thursday.

Ms Mnikathi had not informed anybody that she would not be attending, had not offered an apology nor an explanation, and also failed to designate a fellow director to act in her place at the council meeting.

This caused some commotion at the start of the meeting as there was no-one present to usher in the speaker and the mayor, read the notice of the meeting, or guide the council through the agenda.

Chief financial officer, Haroon Mahomed, was designated acting municipal manager by the council to allow for the meeting to continue.

Asked what had happened to Ms Mnikathi by Councillor Jerry Sibiya, the mayor, Cllr Martin Mtshali responded, “I would like to state on the record that nothing has happened.” Cllr Mtshali would not offer any further explanation than that.

Eventually, the council decided to record that Ms Mnikathi was absent without leave.

At the time of print, Ms Mnikathi had still not provided an explanation for her absence.
