Pensioner robbed by con-caregiver
The victim is a well-known senior citizen in the community and is traumatised in the wake of the incident

Beware of letting a caregiver into your home without prior arrangement, as it may be a way to steal your heard-earned cash and belongings, heartless as this may seem.
On Saturday afternoon, a brazen woman dressed in Muslim attire entered a home under the pretext of representing a non-governmental organisation (NGO). She convinced an elderly, sick resident of the house in Kandahar Avenue that she was sent there as a caregiver and proceeded to massage the lady.
The woman, who allegedly was carrying some forms, willingly exposed her face for a few seconds. She then went to another room while the ‘patient’ rested after the massage.
It was only after the con-caregiver had left that the elderly lady discovered to her horror that some cash, jewellery and other valuables had vanished.
She raised the alarm and neighbours responded to her call. The victim is a well-known senior citizen in the community and is traumatised in the wake of the incident.
A nearby resident is quoted as saying, “This conduct is disgusting, let alone the fact that they are using Islamic attire to enter people’s homes and gain their trust. Not only did this woman steal the old lady’s possessions, she also robbed her of her dignity.”
Police were called and an investigation is being conducted to apprehend the smooth-talking con-artist.
A spokesperson for Mnambithi Caregivers, one of the care-giving associations in town, stressed that, “We have no idea who the perpetrator is and we disassociate ourselves from this type of conduct. The matter has been reported to the police and is under investigation.”
The public is urged NOT to allow anyone into their homes unless Mnambithi Caregivers or any other related organisation has made prior arrangement for rendering service to an ill person.
The organisation added that it is annoying and disheartening that while great strides are being made voluntarily to alleviate the pain and hardship of patients, uncouth individuals jump on the bandwagon to make a quick buck illicitly. “May the long arm of the law apprehend the perpetrator as soon as possible and may she pay the full price for her misdemeanour.”
