Dunlop completes R1.7-billion investment

The investment includes a new compound mixer, tread line, sidewall line and advanced curing technology.

Dunlop Tyres South Africa has completed a R1.7-billion investment at its Ladysmith manufacturing facility, bringing the latest global tyre manufacturing technology to the plant.

The milestone was marked yesterday (August 13) with a visit from Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, who joined Dunlop leadership on a tour of the factory floor.

The visit provided an opportunity to see first-hand how the investment is strengthening local production capabilities, enhancing competitiveness and supporting the future of South African manufacturing.

New manufacturing technology

The three-year investment, backed by parent company Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) of Japan, includes a new compound mixer, tread line, sidewall line and advanced curing technology.

The upgrades improve compound quality, production consistency, tyre performance and manufacturing efficiency, while expanding production capability for passenger, SUV and light truck tyres for local and African export markets.

Supporting sustainable mobility

The upgraded technology enables the production of very low rolling resistance tyres, supporting future vehicle efficiency and emissions requirements.

The new mixer also contributes to more efficient energy use during manufacturing, while improving compound performance.

Boosting the local economy

Dunlop is one of Ladysmith’s largest employers, with the investment also supporting local suppliers, contractors and service providers. The company says the benefits extend beyond the factory, contributing to local business development and long-term economic growth.

The investment positions the Ladysmith facility to play a greater role in supplying these markets and strengthening South Africa’s position as a manufacturing gateway to Africa.
