ANC takes IFP to court

IT SEEMS that post election drama is just starting for AbaQulusi as the ANC has opened a case against the IFP over allegations of fraud.

According to the ANC’s local branch chairperson Mkhanyiseli Mhlongo, a case was opened against the IFP after concerns surrounding how they bussed people in from Zwathi and other rural parts of Zululand to be registered as Ward 13 residents earlier this year arose.

“The same people were then bussed in again on the day of the elections to cast their votes and we believe that this is how they (the IFP) won ward 4 and 13,” said Mr Mhlongo.

The Hawks investigative unit is currently investigating the case.

The Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC’s) communications officer PJ Ndlovu confirmed that the local IEC had been notified by the provincial IEC about this matter and that they were aware that it was currently in court.

“Should the ANC win the case, there will be a by-election for both Wards 4 and 13. There is no other information that we can give off at the moment,” said Mr Ndlovu.

Mr Mhlongo said that it was easy for these people to be registered under Ward 13 as the more rural parts of this ward such as KwaBhanya and Sikhame do not have official addresses.

The IFP was contacted with regards to the matter and no one was reached for comment at the time of going to print.
