NEWCASTLE – An Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed minutes before it should have begun.

Instead, officials attended a rural housing project launch in Charlestown.
The meeting would have dealt with a number of important matters, including efforts to fill the numerous acting positions within the municipality.
A council meeting set for later in the week was also cancelled.
These are some highlights from last week’s Exco meeting:
Resolved
– S. Majola, the acting Chairperson of the Audit Committee, made a presentation to councillors regarding the 2015/2016 financial year.
– Three councillors were confirmed for delegates at the SALGA (South African Local Government Association) KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Conference, which concluded on September 23.
Resolved to recommend
– The 2016 Ward Committee Elections Process Plan is to be put forward to the local Council, and an Election Steering Committee headed by speaker, Jabu Khumalo, be created. Municipal Manager, Errol Mswane was also tasked with appointing a service provider to assist the municipality in conducting the elections.

– The various portfolio standing committees and leadership thereof were appointed under delegated powers. Dudu Sibiya chairs the Community Services Portfolio Standing Committee, with Bebsie Cronje the deputy chair. Racheal Mdluli takes the reins of Corporate Services, aided by Vuselwa Bam. Matthew Shunmugam has individual control over Development Planning and Human Settlements. Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi heads Finances, with his deputy confirmed as Nkosinathi Zwane. Technical Services is led by Reuben Molelekoa, plus Shadrack Thwala in the deputy’s chair.
