Paying more for the coffee ‘fix’ you love so much

Price increase or not, it is doubtful whether coffee drinkers will give up that morning cuppa

How many of you need your coffee ‘fix’ every day? Hmmm, a strong cup with 4 sugars… Sound good?

However, if you’re also a coffee lover, you’ll also realise how the price of your favourite hot drink has increased over the years. The price of coffee has increased by 21 percent in the last three years, according to Statistics South Africa.

Despite the gradual cost increase, the International Coffee Organisation estimates that nine billion kilograms of coffee was consumed in 2014 worldwide, while South Africa consumed around 31.5 million kilograms

In August 2013, 250 grams of instant coffee would’ve set you back an average price of R28. By August this year, coffee aficionados paid an average of R33.97, almost R6 more.

Price increase or not, though, it is doubtful whether coffee drinkers will give up that morning cuppa, or the cups that follow throughout the day for that matter.

As you sip on your Monday cappuccino, cross your fingers that another increase doesn’t hit soon.
