Marchers want answers within 14 days from COGTA

The march was monitored by a heavy police presence.

Endumeni Municipality was again the scene of a march last week after Desi Padayachee was appointed acting municipal manager.

The march, led by the ANC Women’s League and two former ANC Councillors, , Dudu Ncala and Lungile Mbhele, gathered at the McKenzie Street Hall.  They were carrying slogans that read, among other things, ‘Stop Child and Women Abuse’.

There was also one that read ‘Dessy must fall’.  Insults and racial remarks were also made as the group of around 120 made their way to the municipal building to present a memorandum to a Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, COGTA, KE Mthembu.

The memorandum wanted a male municipal official suspended after he was accused of assaulting a female employee last year even though a criminal court found him not guilty.

There were also claims that charges had been laid after a school boy had been assaulted outside of the municipal property.  It was claimed that the official would have been suspended if previous acting municipal manager, MZ Silinga, had not been sacked two days before the end of his contract by the IFP/DA/EFF alliance.

They demanded that COGTA answer their memorandum within 14 days. The march was monitored by a heavy police presence.

Lungile Mbhele had a Council-paid-for bodyguards weeks after losing her Ward in Sithembile.  It is understood that the bodyguards were withdrawn by Mr Padayachee who at that stage was acting Corporate Services Manager.
