Union members stage illegal protest at LHS
Racism and discrimination against workers were the main issues that provoked the protest

South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) members gathered outside Ladysmith High School today (October 12) to protest about issues faced by workers at the school.
Racism and discrimination against workers were the main issues that provoked the protest.
Angry slogans were chanted as they marched to the school, saying that “Racism and discrimination must stop!”
‘Eviction of cleaners must stop’, ‘Freedom of religion in public schools’ and ‘We are all equal’ were some of the messages written on placards carried by the protesters.
As it was an illegal march that was not approved by the municipality, the marchers were forced by police to leave the area. Police threatened to arrest anyone who did not follow their orders.
“We will be back, we will not rest until we see the end of this, we cannot have ‘these people’ treating us this way, not in this day and age. We will not rest until we see an end to this,” screamed the marchers.
They then proceeded to Wimpy Park, where they planned to discuss a way forward.
