DA calls for Mayor to attend financial issues quickly

The Democratic Alliance in AbaQulusi Municipality welcomes the acknowledgement by the new Mayor Martin Mtshali, that all is not well at AqaQulusi Municipality.
In his first media briefing, on September 29, Mtshali asked that the people of AbaQulusi be patient with him on various issues affecting this municipality.
We are aware that Mtshali is new in the position but we feel that there are urgent matters that the Mayor must address with immediate effect.
These issues have brought the municipality to a standstill and we believe needs to be addressed with the utmost urgency. This include:
• R124 million of debtor collection (90 days of non-collection of revenue).
• R9.2 million loss on fraudulent claims of overtime (municipal employees claiming false overtime).
• Irregular expenditures (on non-essential issues) costing the municipality R205 million, in the last 5 years.
• Action against the Municipal Manager who illegally signed a security guard contract which costs R31 million, without consulting the council.
• Key buildings in the municipality and technical sites are not guarded.
• R27 million contract on contract graders that are not monitored by the municipality.
The DA calls on Mayor Mtshali to pay attention to these pressing issues as they are crippling service delivery and allowing corruption to prevail in the impoverished Municipality. We will be waiting for a response from him on the next full council meeting.
It is of paramount importance that municipalities prioritise on service delivery to the people.
It is completely unacceptable that money is misused at the expense of the poor, who continue to
languish in poverty, without the necessary services to which they are entitled.
We will be closely monitoring the performance of the new guard in the Municipality.
