Learners from Ladysmith High School (LHS) have made the school proud by producing excellent results in the SAICA Junior Accounting Olympiad and Finance & Investment Management Olympiad.
In the SAICA and SAIPA Junior Accounting Olympiad, only 10 Grade 9 LHS learners were allowed to participate. Nosipho Mtshali was tied in first place in KZN with two other learners.
All 10 learners excelled and LHS placed second in KZN with an average of 84%.
The University of Johannesburg Finance & Investment Management Olympiad, commonly referred to as UJ FIMO, was open to all high schools in South Africa. The current curriculum for schools in South Africa does not include Financial Management and Investment Management at a higher education curriculum level – it’s a combination of Accounting, Economics, Business Studies and Maths.
These were the subject areas in combination that were tested in this Olympiad, which made it very challenging. No less than 2010 Grade 10 to 12 learners participated nationally.
An astounding 61 LHS learners went through to the second round. Luyanda Mncube came second in the Grade 11 group nationally and because of this, he has been invited to attend a prize-giving ceremony hosted by the University of Johannesburg to acknowledge the top 10 achievers.
This is LHS’s third year entering the SAIPA and SAICA Accounting Olympiads. A record 30 Grade 12 learners entered the SAIPA round 1 Olympiad, with 11 learners, also a record, proceeding to round 2, even though the requirement to do so increased from 50 to 65% or more this year.
Kashmira Mahadew was the top achiever for LHS with a result of 86.5%.
SAICA’s prestigious Olympiad only permits 15 Accounting learners from Grade 11 to 12 to participate. Keshlin Naidoo was placed 34th in KZN at 81%.
LHS was placed fifth overall in KZN with an average of 68.3%.
