Signal Hill grapples with no water

Residents say they've been without water for 6 days.

Residents of Upper Signal Hill have reportedly been without water for six days.

This, according to Newcastle Municipality, is the result of a faulty pump at the Milky Way pump station.

In an official statement released earlier today (October 17), Newcastle Municipality confirmed that the water supply disruption was caused by a faulty pump and said its technical team was at the station, busy with emergency repairs.

The affected streets are Capricorn, Star Crescent, Pisces, Meteor, Lunar, Gemini, Sun and Libra Street.

The municipality further stated that water tankers would be dispatched to the affected areas to provide temporary relief.

“We apologise for the inconvenience. Normal supply will be restored as soon as repairs are completed. Further updates will follow,” the municipality said.

However, resident Marilze Greyvenstein claims the disruption has been ongoing for six days, with residents only now receiving confirmation of the fault.

“We have been without water for the past six days,” Greyvenstein said.

She alleges that the pump was only opened today, saying she doesn’t know when the supply will be restored, eventually.

“I don’t know when we’ll see water, as there isn’t stock of the part they need to fix the pump,” she said.

Residents want answers

Greyvenstein said residents are at their wits’ end and deserve transparent communication from the municipality regarding the ongoing disruption.

She called for an explanation of what went wrong, why it has taken so long to identify the fault, and what the plan of action is to restore the water supply.
