Stormwater drain poses threat to children

Burning question by resident: “It is in the municipality's interests to fix it, as someone could get hurt. Who would be held liable if they did?”

NEWCASTLE – Residents are cautioned about a gaping stormwater drain in Kudu Avenue.

“I first noticed the lid was cracked about two weeks ago when my daughter and I took our dog for a walk,” said resident, Chantal van Biljon.

Ms van Biljon became concerned when she recently noticed the lid was gone, exposing a deep hole.

“Nothing was covering the hole. There are children playing in the park, cycling in the area and walking home from school. What if one of them fell in the hole?”

“It is in the municipality’s interests to fix it, as someone could get hurt. Who would be held liable if they did?” Ms van Biljon asked.

The municipality’s communication department was contacted for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to print.
