UThukela District Municipality Deputy Mayor Councillor NW Sibiya, accompanied by Executive Committee member Cllr M Khumalo who is also a Chairperson of Water and Sanitation, Technical Services and Health Services Portfolio Committee, uThukela Chief Whip Cllr A Mkhize and Cllr S Msibi on Tuesday, October 18 introduced the contractor in Weenen and Emabhanoyini under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

The contractor will be undertaking the construction of a sanitation and sewer reticulation project in ward 22 and at Emabhanoyini in ward 23 the contractor will be undertaking the construction of a water project. UThukela District Municipality is duty bound as the district to make sure that every household has proper and hygienic sanitation in their yard.

“We are bringing services here in Weenen and eZitedeni because it is our aim to bring proper and hygienic sanitation to the community. We therefore are here to introduce a contractor who is ready to start working from November 1. The project will also create temporary employment for the locals,” said Cllr NW Sibiya.

About 400 households are expected to benefit from this project in Weenen and 1 560 at Emabhanoyini. The sanitation and sewer reticulation project has been awarded to a private company called SBT Civils Construction and the water project was awarded to Akwande Civils. The source of funding is the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) which has been made available by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

It is estimated that over R32 million will be injected into the project upon its completion. Service delivery programmes have since been started in some of the areas across the district. The project is envisaged to take about 12 months to complete.

The project is also expected to create about 140 temporary job opportunities for the local people.
