BREAKING NEWS: CBD locked down for Julius Malema

Parts of Murchison Street have been closed off.

NEWCASTLE – Security has been tightened ahead of EFF leader, Julius Malema’s, appearance at the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court today.

Our journalists on scene have reported that ANC members have joined with EFF supporters, while a mobile stage has been erected, blaring struggle songs.

The Citizen reported that according to Malema’s summons, he is accused of contravening Section 18 (2) (b) of the Riotous Assemblies Act, Act 17 of 1956 for allegedly inciting, instigating, commanding or procuring his Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) followers and/or others to commit crime, to wit, trespass, in contravention of Section 1 (1) of the Trespass Act 6 of 1959 by illegally occupying any vacant land whenever they found some in June this year.

These charges were allegedly brought by the Hawks, and a summons then served to Malema.

SAPS Newcastle has also released a statement to businesses in and around the CBD, to exercise caution during the course of today.

Heavy police presenceĀ surrounds the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court. Parts of Murchison Street have also been closed off as EFF supporters demonstrate outside.

Tersi Gopi, for the Newcastle Advertiser, said:

“Mr Malema has yet to make an appearance but his supporters continue to chant and await his arrival. Supporters of the ruling party, the ANC, have also joined in the demonstration. Police and traffic officials are present on scene.”

We will keep you updated.

Residents are advised to exercise caution when travelling or walking in the CBD.
