Blocked drains cause flooding

Heavy rain pelted down; causing the gutters to overflow and pavements were awash with rainwater

While rainfall is a welcome sight for many, some business owners in Alfred Street pray for a dry day so that business can continue as usual.

A heavy downpour signals that pavements and business premises will be flooded, causing some business owners to shut their shops and embark on clean-up projects.

Such an incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. Heavy rain pelted down; causing the gutters to overflow and pavements were awash with rainwater.

Sections of the pavement and gutters in Alfred Street were completely flooded. According to a business owner, the gutters and storm water drains in this newly rehabilitated road are blocked and this causes the flooding of the streets and pavements.

He added that this happens every time there is medium to heavy rainfall. He calls on the local municipality to act on this before severe damage is caused to businesses and the street.
