‘I do right, even when nobody is watching’

Various municipalities and councillors gathered at the AG Magubane Stadium in Steadville last Friday to launch a campaign to fight against corruption within the government sphere.

The event saw a large, interested audience gathered to see what the campaign was all about. Called ‘I do right, even when nobody is watching’, the campaign encourages government workers, mayors and councillors to do their jobs with integrity and not to be corrupt as they go about their duties.

The large crowd was delighted about the launch, as they feel that workers in municipalities are corrupt and biased.
“The launch of this campaign is to ensure that all corruption in the government sphere, especially by councillors, is dealt with and that workers who are found guilty are removed,” said KZN Premier Willies Mchunu.

The ‘I do right’ campaign was launched under the Integrity Management Unit (IMU). In March 2011, the Office of the Premier established the IMU, whose constituent parts are the following directorates: Anti-Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate and Service Delivery Complaints Management.

uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko urged people to report any acts of corruption and do so without fear.

Speaking for the Alfred Duma Local Municipality, Mayor Vincent Madlala touched on the taxi war killings and the shutting down of the water works plant, saying that all these killings should stop and the perpetrators put behind bars. On the shutting down of the water supply in the Embizeni area of Ezakheni, Mayor Madlala stated that innocent people should not suffer because of family wars.
