Elite team nabs suspects for drugs, illegal firearm, ammunition

Three suspects, aged between 21 and 31 years old, appeared in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court today (November 16) for possession of drugs, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Ladysmith K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) and Pietermaritzburg TRT officers, who are part of the provincial deployment in the Uthukela Cluster, made the arrests yesterday at around midday.
Two of the suspects were arrested in Ezakheni C1-Section after they were found in possession of 535 whole mandrax tablets, 19 three-quarter mandrax tablets, three half mandrax tablets and 18 quarter mandrax tablets.
The street value of the drugs is estimated to be around R45,000.
The third suspect was arrested in Ezakheni B-Section after he was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with eight rounds of ammunition. He faces charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa praised the policemen for their dedication in getting rid of drugs and unlicensed firearms in our community. “We want our society to be free from drugs and we will continue to fight criminals in our province,” he said.
