Man cycles 6000km for charity

Michael travels with his bicycle and trailer, and does not have any medical personnel if something should happen

Michael van der Merwe, who has been on a cycling journey for charity, aims to raise R5,ooo,000 by pedaling 6000km around the country.

“The purpose of this adventure is to raise funds for the Lovedeeds organisation, which is an NGO that creates awareness and helps in issues faced by women in society,” says Michael.

Beginning on November 11 in Johannesburg, Michael claims he has already done 669km from his starting point at Makro Carnival and has only raised R50 since the inception of his 6000km cycle.

“I only have R50 saved in the bank account, with most of the money raised going into sustaining the trip. I have to buy food along the way, and repair my bicycle and trailer,” adds the enthusiastic cyclist.

Michael says he began his journey in Johannesburg and has gone through Middelburg. He will go down along the coast to Amanzimtoti and then through the North Coast to Bloemfontein, and finally back to where he started.

Michael popped into the Ladysmith Gazette offices on Monday (November 21) and asked that people along the way help to make this adventure a success.

“I want to build a ‘safe house’ for women who are poverty stricken and those who have suffered abuse and are seeking new homes,” said Michael.

Michael travels with his bicycle and trailer, and does not have any medical personnel following if something should happen. He says that’s what makes his journey different from the others.

Michael can be contacted on 0722325645 / 0785295911 or you can visit his Facbook page ‘Michael’s Angels’ for further information.
