He may have only been introduced to the sport recently, but Mayor Mbatha is fully throwing his support behind the development of Jukskei in the area.
The Mayor recently visited Dundee Junior School where Mr Lombard has been training previously disadvantaged learners in the sport. Jukskei is an indigenous sport started in South Africa in 1734. It involves teams throwing a ‘skei’ at a peg in the ground from a fixed distance in an attempt to score points. Jukskei is considered the third most technically difficult sport.

Despite never having seen or played the sport, the Mayor gave it a go and even knocked on the peg on the third attempt, much to the joy of the learners gathered to watch.
The Mayor said that the purpose of his visit was to get an introduction to the sport and see how best council can support it. He praised and thanked learners from Umzinyathi District who have represented the province and the country for the sport. 16 learners and 5 officials from the district will be going to the SA National Schools Championship in Kroonstad.
IFP Councillor, Kallie Karelse thanked the Mayor for taking time out of his schedule to give back to sport development, adding what a huge honour it was for the Mayor to be present.
