WITH cricket in his blood and a fiery passion for the sport in his heart, Vryheid High School student, Connor High, is bowling over the local cricketing landscape.
At sixteen-years-old, this aspiring young cricketing talent has been selected to represent the prestigious Kingsmead Mynahs schools invitation team for 2016, a virtually unheard of and honourable feat for a player from a non-private school.
The Kingsmead Mynahs Club, based in the Kingsmead cricket ground, was established in 1971 with the goal to promote and foster cricket in Kwazulu-Natal. Every year they select a team of the best schoolboy cricketers in the province that are destined for higher honours. This team then plays a week of cricket against some of the top teams in Kwazulu-Natal.
Connor has a long list of cricket achievements to his name, most recently achieving honours in cricket and being named Vryheid High School Cricketer of the Year, as well as Vryheid Cricket Club’s Bowler of the Year for last season. He also made his way to the third and final round of the KZN Inland u/17 Trials and being selected for the KZN Inland President’s XI.
“Unfortunately, nothing comes for free and the players have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation as well as a subscription fee of R600,” states Cameron Boock, Secretary of Vryheid Cricket Club. “This is why we are trying to raise funds for Connor’s tour, which begins on December 2 with a capping ceremony at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium with the Dolphins cricket players.”
Connor’s parents, Adele and Gary High, have been a constant support to Connor and his younger sister, Kayla, who is also making great strides in the cricket world, encouraging them to follow their dreams on the cricket pitch.
“I’m very proud of them,” states Adele, “and Gary for his passion with his kids.”
“Maybe all those years of backyard cricket and net sessions are starting to pay off,” jokes Gary.
“We do believe he is going places with his cricket,” adds Boock. “We are asking for donations towards his expenses for this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Anyone who would like to assist Connor High in making his cricket dream a reality can contact Cameron Boock on 083 868 1808.
