ON November 8, 21 very nervous gymnasts stood in line to compete in their club competition.

Synergy Gymnastics Club offers women’s artistic gymnastics for girls. There are four disciplines, namely floor, beam, vault and bar. The gymnasts only did three of these disciplines for the competition as their coach, Julia Olivier, was off for a term. They performed amazingly well and showed their strength and discipline throughout the competition.

Two levels competed. Level one’s overall winner was shared between Leandri Grobler and Zane van Deventer who both received gold. Second place went to Zahia Meer who received silver. Guiliana Vyncke came third and received a bronze medal. Zifikile Zwane, Ivana Vyncke, Mia Myburgh, Emma Mattison, Nomcebo Nxumalo, Megan Gevers, Zahia Meer and Luthfiya Manjoo were all awarded bronze medals. The most improved gymnast for level one was Zane van Deventer.

Level two’s overall winner and gold medalist was Alexa Olivier. Diane Gunter came second and was awarded a silver medal. Daniela Vonkeman was third and received bronze. Tandi Kunene, Tracey Steffenson, Tanya Fourie, Owami Mthetwa, Humairah Moola and Zianda Zwane all received bronze medals. Tandi Kunene received the prize for the most improved gymnast on level two. Emma Mattison was awarded the prize for the most courageous gymnast and Luthfiya Manjoo received the prize for the most dedicated gymnast.

A very big thank you, again, to Cornel Nigrini, who judged and did an exceptional job as always. I would like to say thank you to every single gymnast for their dedication. You were all so special to work with and I will miss you very much. Due to my relocation to Bloemfontein, I will not be continuing with gymnastics coaching next year. The club is fortunate to have Kinnie van der Walt who will be taking over from me.
