Meet a friendly face that knows all about meat

Piet’s friendly face and confident smile set many a customer at ease as he provided them with the finest cuts for any occasion

No matter how many ways you slice it, you will be hard-pressed to find a man who knows more about meat than Ladysmith’s own Piet Maree.

Having worked in many butcheries in town over the years, Piet celebrated his 80th birthday on November 14 and got to meet all the old familiar faces of friends and family who gathered to share this special occasion with him.

Piet’s friendly face and confident smile set many a customer at ease as he provided them with the finest cuts for any occasion.

Born in Zululand, Mr Maree was a great cyclist and sportsman back in the day. He moved to Ladysmith when he was 16 years old and has been in the meat trade ever since.

Now an octogenarian, Piet has one son and one grandson.

“I love my meat and was very passionate about making sure my customers got the very best every time,” he says with a smile that speaks volumes of the invaluable experience he has acquired over the decades.

Besides having been in the meat trade for many years, Piet is well-known for his exploits in hockey and as a great cyclist.

“I played hockey as far back as when I was living in Zululand, and I’m proud to say I was really good at it. That was my favourite sport, but I stopped playing as I grew older,” he explains.

He then moved on to enjoy cycling and was spotted pumping those pedals in different areas every day.

After suffering a heart attack, he stopped cycling and concentrated exclusively on the meat business.

Last week Wednesday, friends and family got together to throw him a surprise party at their church.
