Update: Child in hijacked car rescued

The 9-year-old boy was left in the car when the suspects drove off

The 9-year-old boy who was a victim of a hijacking today (December 14) and still on board when the hijackers sped away has been rescued.

The boy, along with his family, were in a car when they were hijacked in Mooi River.

The hijackers proceeded towards Ladysmith, using the Ezakheni road, with the family still in the car.

They stopped at Midlands Motors service station in the Ladysmith CBD to fill up with petrol.

The father then attempted to fight off the hijackers, who were armed with a gun and a knife, while the wife and older child managed to jump out of the vehicle.

The 9-year-old boy was left in the car when the suspects fled.

Secure SA sent out an alert message to be on the lookout for the hijacked vehicle.

The vehicle was spotted heading towards Durban and a high-speed chase ensued involving the K9 Unit, CIG, Bergville traffic officers and farmers.

The brave team managed to intercept the vehicle at Loskop, bringing it to a halt. Two suspects were arrested.

Sharaj Ambulance Services treated the boy on scene and he will now be taken home to be reunited with his family.
