Albatros Guesthouse darkened by the ‘Christmas Grinch’

"It could also be religious intolerance which caused the destruction, because there will always be 'Grinches of Christmas'."

Albatros Guesthouse was plunged into darkness when its Christmas spirit was ripped off its walls on December 4.

The guesthouse was vandalised, by unknown individuals, who took Christmas lights and the bell off the walls and damaged them.

Manageress of Albatros, Sharon van Staden, said her daughter came from Pretoria to display the lights, and they had been on the walls since November with no problems. However once the lights were switched on, they were forcefully taken down.

“Our lights harmed no one and it was our time and money that was spent on it. I believe this may be an act of jealousy because the guesthouse was closed for a period, and we recently reopened its doors after renovations.”

She believed it could also be religious intolerance which caused the destruction, because there will always be ‘Grinches of Christmas’.

A worker at Albatros, Nomusa Msibi, explained she was on duty and went outside to perform her tasks. “I noticed the lights pulled down, the bell broken and lying on the floor and cable clips which held up the lights lying all over the driveway,” she said.

The two disheartened employees confirmed nothing was stolen, but it was an incident of unnecessary vandalism which dampened their Christmas cheer.
