As we say goodbye to 2016 and reflect on the year, here is a look at the most read stories from the year that was

1. Crocodile recovered from Weenen river – 2 826 pageviews.

In February a security guard spotted a 2.5 metre-long crocodile swimming along the Mshotsheni river, which is close to a construction site. Rangers from the Weenen Game Reserve removed the croc.
2. Masonite sold – 1000s of jobs saved – 2 581 pageviews.

Masonite announced in May that the company had new owners who have KwaZulu-Natal roots and a long-term plan for the company. This was a real win for employees as it protects over 1 000 jobs and meant that the business will continue to be active in Estcourt.
3. Deadly shootout between police and robbery suspects – 1 937 pageviews.
In April five suspects who had robbed a business in Estcourt were making an escape on the R103 when they were confronted by police. The suspects started shooting, before abandoning their vehicle and trying to flee on foot. Police then retaliated and the five suspects, aged between 28 and 55-years, were killed on scene.
4. Suspect killed after Winterton business robbery – 1 823 pageviews.
Two suspects held up security guards who were on duty at a business centre in March. When Winterton police arrived on scene they witnessed the two suspects exiting the premises, with firearms in hand. One of the suspects was shot dead, while the other fled.
5. BREAKING NEWS: Tight finish between ANC and IFP during municipal elections – 1 762 pageviews.
The African National Congress (ANC) received the largest chunk of the votes, with 29 900 votes, translating to 49.43 percent. This was followed closely by the Inkatha Freedom party with 24 470 votes, 39.88 percent during the Local Government Elections in August.
