Breakwaters, Stillwaters merge into single angling team

Internal competition within the ranks of both Breakwaters and Stillwaters remain fiercely contested

Both Breakwaters and Stillwaters are affiliates of the Angling Professional League (APL). At the start of the season, the club released some of its members to join the newly formed Ladysmith Angling Club with the view to growing the APL.
It meant that both Breakwaters and Stillwaters would undergo a rebuilding phase. Previously, it would have been easy to field a contingent of 25 members however, this season, this task proved to be a little daunting. Both clubs nevertheless fished with members available and did exceedingly well as they remain firmly perched on the top of the VME League with 36 pts; followed by Stillwaters on 28 pts; Ladysmith with 24 pts; Challengers on 23 pts and Dannhauser with 7 pts.
Internal competition within the ranks of both Breakwaters and Stillwaters remain fiercely contested. In the internal knock out singles, Fanie Els will fish against Ossie Oosthuizen while in Stillwaters, Martin Joseph will fish against Mark Ince.
In the doubles finals, Fanie Els and Bobby Ramkelawan of Breakwaters will fish against Mark Ince and Anil Boodhoo in the finals.
The title contenders for Breakwaters/Stillwaters are: Vernon Naidoo (heaviest scaled fish – carp of 3,3,75kg); Sikander Amod (heaviest non-scaled fish – Barbel of 6,9kg); Thasheel Rooplal (heaviest scaly of 1,210kg); Suvyn Budhoo (rare species – a bass of 1,090kg); Fanie Els (Most Fish Caught and Angler of Year); Albert van Niekerk (highest point scorer – 40 points in league 4); Veruschka Boodhoo (Lady Angler of the Year – 20 points); Mohamed Sheik (Junior Angler of the Year – 7 pts); Kidd Rampersadh (Senior Angler of the Year – 8pts).
Other titles, which are intention include, the Champion of Champion, League Champion, Social Outing Champion (Scaled and non-scaled); Knock Out Champion and Grand Challenge Champion. The title for “angler of the year” remains hotly contested with Fanie Els leading the pack with 55 points, followed by Anil Boodhoo on 52 points, Albert Van Niekerk on 43 points; Mark Ince and Kaveer Singh on 41 points each.
The future competitions are bound to be fiercely contested as members try to stake their claim to glory.
The highlight of the season thus far was the 25th-anniversary celebration of the Club at a prestigious function which was attended by four times world champion, Loutjie Louwies and 16 times South African Champion. It was indeed an event to savour.
The next fixture of Breakwaters would be the social overnight outing in Zone D and E on January 7, followed by the Champion of Champion Round 2 on January 29 at Sandford.
