Ingula to host Wetlands Walk
The centre is currently planning a programme for Water Week, which will take place in March

Just 50km outside Ladysmith is a whole different world of wetlands and grassland which town-dwellers seldom get to see, never mind experience firsthand.
Eskom’s newest and largest hydro-pumped storage scheme was completed last year and after Nambiti, it has the largest nature reserve in our area. It also has a Visitors Centre. Since 2010, the Visitors Centre at Ingula has hosted a wetlands walk to enable people to get to know the station and to learn more about the importance of wetlands.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2 and at Ingula, wetlands are very important too.
Not only are they very rich in biodiversity, but they also perform several ecological services such as retaining water for slow release throughout the year, preventing floods, filtering water and providing habitat to several of South Africa’s critically endangered birds.
Since the Ingula Visitors Centre began operating in 2009, it has received over 30,000 visitors. School groups are one of their target audiences and make up a large percentage of their visitors.
The centre is currently planning a programme for Water Week, which will take place in March.
The Wetlands Walk will take place on Saturday, February 18, and is open to the public. Just make sure to book by e-mailing Fifi Meyer on fifi.meyer@eskom.co.za or phoning 0836275758.
