Prefabricated homes left damaged in Acaciavale, Ladysmith

The prefab houses are situated in Marula Drive, Smartiesville, in the Ladysmith area

Prefabricated houses that were built for people whose RDP houses were destroyed in the heavy hailstorm of December 2012 have been almost totally destroyed by vandals.

Ironically, nobody ever moved into the hastily erected prefabricated homes and over the years that have passed, they have been asset-stripped.

The municipality built the houses as part of a programme that was meant to accommodate those affected by the devastating hailstorm. The municipality had promised the community that they would fix all the storm-damaged houses after receiving millions of rands from government after the natural disaster.

The prefab houses are situated in Marula Drive, Smartiesville, in the Ladysmith area.

“The municipality were meant to rebuild people’s homes, but nothing has been done up until now. The only thing that is left now is the haunting reminder of the municipality’s failed attempt to assist, in the form of the prefab eyesore,” said a concerned resident.

The community has raised concerns about the now damaged prefabricated homes that were supposed to accommodate the hailstorm victims. They say these houses were built for a reason and that it has been over four years since the municipality promised to fix their storm-damaged homes, and now both the prefab houses and the houses that needed repairing are in a similar state.
