Ladysmith historian celebrates 80 years by flying high in the sky

Eventually, after many postponements due to windy weather, Liz eventually fulfilled her dream on December 4

Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Spiret is a well-known figure in Ladysmith as one of only a few military history specialists in town. She has taken countless numbers of people on tours of the battlefields and the Siege Museum.

Having celebrated her 80th birthday, which was on August 30 last year, Liz dearly wanted to fulfil a life-long dream of soaring through the air in a hot air balloon.

Members of the Ladysmith Tourism Association and the Ladysmith Siege Museum Trust seized the opportunity and pitched in to make this dream of hers come true. Drakensberg Ballooning in Winterton also pitched in and sponsored half of the cost.

Eventually, after many postponements due to windy weather, Liz eventually fulfilled her dream on December 4.

At the crack of dawn, Liz and husband Henry set off for Drakenberg Ballooning, where they were greeted with coffee and rusks before being whisked off into the air. Once back on the ground, they were treated to a scrumptious breakfast.

Following the flight, an elated and slightly breathless Liz said: “It was absolutely amazing! A dream come true – thank you to everyone involved for making it possible!”
