UPDATE: Communal homes continue to operate illegally

Despite the municipality handing out notices to the owners of communal homes, the issue persists.

The behaviour of occupants of communal homes continues to be a thorn in the flesh of Barry Hertzog Park residents.

Recently, the municipality officially notified owners to comply with municipal by-laws, or face legal action.

The seven days of grace to comply had no effect.

“The communal homes are a nuisance, as the residents show no consideration to others. They have parties well into the morning, and when you confront them about the noise, you just get sworn at,” claimed a resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

Another resident said her family endured endless troubles caused by the occupants of a neighbouring communal home.

“We just have a fence between our yards, so we often see the occupants urinating in the yard.”

The municipality was contacted to comment on the matter.

“We cannot give you the required information for now, as this will jeopardise the operation. At the appropriate time, a statement in this regard will be issued,” responded Newcastle Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi.
