Rhino wrestlers hunger for more success after 30 years

Every wrestling guru is trying to find the secret to KZN'S new found wrestling success and bags full of medals!

With the Northern KZN Rhino’s Wrestling Club this year marking their 30th anniversary, there is an eagerness in the camp to ensure that this is again a successful season.
The season got off to a flying start with the Rhinos hosting a KZN training camp in Glencoe over the weekend, in which 65 wrestlers from five clubs participated.
Wrestlers came from Richard Bay, the Cougars, Volksrust, Northern Natal Rhinos and the Animal Wrestling Club, Durban. The Rhinos had an exceptional 2016 season, bagging 15 medals at one national championship, which is a KZN record. The province marked their best results in 10 years.
“These achievements are the direct result of a generous sponsorship from Orange Grove’s No Mercy League. Wrestlers were forced to fight four full matches in each of the four events,” said head coach, Steven Brown. “This gave each participant 64 minutes on the mat. Matching was also done on basic strength versus strength, giving everyone a fair chance. Every wrestling guru is trying to find the secret to KZN’S new found wrestling success and bags full of medals!”
The Rhinos and KZN, as a province, now have the daunting task of trying to improve on their 2016 achievements. The training camp in Glencoe was the first step. Judging on the enthusiasm and eagerness amongst the participants, the sky is the limit.
“The management wants to make 2017 a special year,” said Steven. “Recruiting new wrestlers is high on our agenda. We invite all interested parties to attend wrestling practices. These take place at Sarel Cilliers High School, Glencoe on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5:30pm – 7pm.” Details: contact Steven at 082 880 8629.
