NEWCASTLE – MEC for KwaZulu-Natal Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, declared school learners were not to be taken to school in the goods compartment of a bakkie or truck.
“This is also relevant for people with bakkies who have been hired to transport children to school and back,” said Protection Services Chief Traffic Officer, Ashok Anandhaw.

In the future, companies transporting staff in a bakkie or truck’s goods section need to take precautionary measures to safeguard passengers.
“The sides have to be 350mm high if staff are seated and 950 mm if they are standing,” Chief Anandhaw said.
Trespassers will be charged.
“Local traffic officials and RTI will ensure the law is being enforced.”
Chief Anandhaw said a transport operating licence was necessary for taxis transporting children to school and back home.
Certain criteria must be met before approval, including road worthiness.
Applications can be made at Protection Services and RTI.
“If caught without the licence, the vehicle is subject to being impounded and the driver and owner of the taxi will be charged,” warned Chief Anandhaw.
