Sewer still continues to flow into homes

The blocked sewer has been overflowing for the past 2 months

Residents of Albrecht Road and Koppie Road are facing a huge problem of raw sewage flowing into their homes and yards.

A blocked sewer has been overflowing for the past two months, from December last year, and residents say they can’t manage anymore due to the smell and mosquitoes.

Homeowners Gwen van Niekerk, Nokuthula Hlatswayo and Mrs Maphalala are at their wit’s end and don’t know who to turn to for relief. The homeowners have young children who love to play outside and they can’t do this anymore because of the terrible smell, mosquitoes and flies, and the health risk the effluent poses.

uThukela workers did go out to attend to the problem in Albrecht Road, but left Koppie Road untouched and the homeowners ask why the problem couldn’t be fixed once and for all in both streets, as they are right next to each other.

Bombarded day and night by the rotten stench, they are not able to open their windows or even eat in their own homes. They ask: “How can we live in such bad conditions?”

Councillor Abbas Warasally says the problem needs to be fixed as soon as possible so that the residents can get back to leading a normal life once again.
