Newcastle backs aviation academy partnership

Newcastle Municipality and Fuze Aviation Academy outlined their plans for jobs, training and the 2026 Airshow.

Newcastle Local Municipality, in partnership with Fuze Aviation Academy, hosted a high-level stakeholder engagement session at Newcastle Airport on Friday.

The session formally introduced the academy to the Newcastle community and outlined its operational mandate, investment plans and long-term commitment to the city.

Fuze Aviation Academy, which has received council approval to host the 2026 Newcastle Airshow, used the engagement to present its business operations, institutional capacity and strategic objectives for Newcastle.

As first-time event organisers in the municipality, academy representatives engaged directly with municipal leadership, businesses and community stakeholders to build confidence in their ability to deliver a world-class aviation event.

Municipality highlights economic growth potential

Newcastle Mayor DX Dube said the municipality is positioning Newcastle as a hub for investment, innovation and economic diversification in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The entry of Fuze Aviation Academy into our city is a direct outcome of that strategy. Aviation is a proven catalyst for tourism, trade, skills development and infrastructure growth,” said Dube.

“We expect this partnership to deliver tangible outcomes in employment, enterprise development and youth skills transfer.”

Dube emphasised that the municipality remains committed to creating an enabling environment for credible private-sector partners that demonstrate technical competence, financial capacity and accountability.

He added that approval for the 2026 Newcastle Airshow remains subject to strict compliance with regulatory, safety and financial requirements.

Airshow plans focus on skills and accountability

Key outcomes highlighted during the engagement included aviation-related training opportunities for Newcastle youth through partnerships with local Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions and industry partners.

The engagement also focused on using the 2026 Airshow to stimulate growth in the hospitality, transport, retail and informal trade sectors.

Plans to revitalise Newcastle Airport formed part of the broader municipal strategy to reposition the airport as a functional economic asset.

The municipality and Fuze Aviation Academy will also establish a joint monitoring mechanism to ensure transparency in delivery, procurement and community participation.

Dr Thandi Ngcobo, chief executive officer of Fuze Aviation Academy, reaffirmed the academy’s commitment to the aviation sector and its ability to deliver the 2026 Airshow to international standards.

“We are not here for a once-off event. Our objective is to establish a permanent footprint in Newcastle that contributes to skills development, industrial growth and regional competitiveness,” said Ngcobo.

The municipality reiterated that no preferential treatment would be granted outside statutory procurement and regulatory processes.

Performance will be measured against deliverables, timelines and economic impact.

The 2026 Newcastle Airshow has been positioned as a flagship economic activation initiative under the municipality’s Vision 2030 agenda.

Further public briefings will be held as project milestones are reached.
