Pistol club enthusiasts bang on target

While the sport is often in the spotlight, pistol shooting has been enjoyed in the area for years with two active clubs keeping enthusiasts on target. Dr Jan Fourie and the late Hans Lourens founded the Wasbank shooting club about…years ago. The Alwynkop Shooting Club was founded in the late 1980, also by the Hans Lourens and assisted by Ben Swiegers, Hendrik Klopper and Malan Nel.

Both clubs come together once a month at Wasbank on Mr Ferreira’s farm on the Dundee-Vryheid road.
“We promote the sport of pistol shooting as a family activity and we have ladies and children participating. The sport is enjoyed by all races,” said club member, Fritz Botes. “Because of very strict safety rules and our passion for discipline the sport is not everybody’s cup of tea. “Our oldest member who is still shooting is the well-known Foy Vermaak. Our youngest shooters are Gerhard Botes (15 years) and Hendrik Coetzee (15 years).”

If you are a well-disciplined person you can contact Chris de Jager, Fritz Botes or Frik Coetzee to find out how to participate in the club events. Both clubs are affiliated to SAPSA (South African Pistol Shooting Association). Both clubs recently announced their 2016 champions with Chris de Jager voted Alwynkop Shooting Club champion. Frik Coetzee the Wasbank Shooting Club champion and Hendrik Coetzee the junior champion of both clubs.
