Is there hope for Mahlubi Mangwe Primary School?

The school was built by community members but has not been maintained due to the lack of funds

Mahlubi Mangwe Primary School is crumbling around its learners and educators. Tucked away along a tough drive, navigating muddy tracks in Loskop, one part of the school building, which houses grade four and five, stands like a neglected outcast, dirty, broken and crumbling on the inside.

Almost a kilometre away, the other part of the school is also in a sorry state. Broken windows and doors and insufficient toilets are just some of the problems the learners and educators have to deal with daily.

The school was built by community members but has not been maintained due to the lack of funds. Councillor Mthembeni Majola was told of the school’s plight.

“The learners are eager to go to school and the teachers are happy to deliver in the classroom, even though they don’t have adequate facilities. Different grades are crammed into one class, ants are eating the furniture and they only have two toilets to accommodate the entire school,” commented Mr Majola.

He has since donated doors for the buildings and uniforms for the children. But these are not enough and he calls on locals to assist with maintenance of the school.

The Education Department has also been engaged and mobile classrooms were delivered to the school last week. Other concerns relating to the toilet facilities, structural faults and more space for the growing school, which now has an enrolment of 230, has been sent to the department’s media liaison department for comment.
