Free sanitary pads for schoolgirls in KwaZulu Natal
An initiative like this could make a huge difference in young girls' lives.
A natural order in a women’s life has stopped many schoolgirls from attending school, for the simple fact of not being able to afford sanitary towels.
A government programme to provide KwaZulu Natal (KZN) schoolgirls with free sanitary pads, kicked off in January.
A circular posted on the KwaZulu-Natal education department’s website dated January 22 read: “KZN Department of Education has initiated and launched a project for the provisioning of sanitary pads to indigent girl learners in selected quintiles 1-4 schools in Grades 4-12”.

It further stated that Provincial and district officials will monitor the distribution of sanitary pads to schools and funding for the purchase of the sanitary pads will not come from the schools’ allocation.
An initiative like this could make a huge difference in young girls’ lives.
According to the circular, the first packs of sanitary pads will be distributed to 2992 schools in January. Schoolgirls will receive a pack of pads from a school official each month.
