Endumeni fails to pass budget despite ultimatum
Endumeni councillors have again failed to adopt the municipal budget despite a provincial ultimatum.
Endumeni Municipality this morning again failed to adopt its 2026/27 budget, despite an ultimatum from KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers.
Councillors voted 7-6 against the budget today, Monday morning, with the Democratic Alliance and African National Congress combining to outvote the Inkatha Freedom Party.
Councillors reject budget
The Democratic Alliance and African National Congress said they could not support the budget because it remained unfunded and contained what they described as numerous inconsistencies, and that no changes had been made since the first budget was tabled in June.
They argued that the municipality’s Eskom debt, which exceeds R500 million, is greater than the municipality’s total projected revenue. They also said the budget failed to provide meaningful solutions to Endumeni’s deteriorating infrastructure and financial challenges.
Province expected to intervene
The municipality now faces provincial intervention after failing to comply with the deadline set by the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury.
