Elderly folk are often seen as ‘soft targets’ by criminals. This sees them being exposed to crimes like bag snatchings, home invasions and theft.

To sensitise the elderly and provide useful tips, two police officers from the Estcourt station were invited to the Estcourt Senior Citizens Club meeting on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Nishal Mahadow and Warrant Officer Asmani Charran both emphasised that the elderly are seen as vulnerable and that is why they need to take extra precaution when in town and at home.

“When you go to town for your grant, do not carry valuables in your handbag or wear expensive jewellery. The crime rate in town is high, especially with bag snatchings. When you are at home, keep all the gates locked,” advised W/O Mahadow.

W/O Charran pointed out that the elderly have a trusting nature, which may place them at a disadvantage.

“Criminals are aware that the elderly are alone at home during the day due to family members working and this makes you an easy target. You have to be aware,” she said.
