FLOOD UPDATE: Can Newcastle residents expect more flooding?
Due to the looming threat, Newcastle 911 Community spokesperson, Johan Pieters is appealing to companies and individuals to please assist families that might be affected, by donating tin food.
More sluice gates at Chelmsford/Ntshingwayo Dam will apparently be opened due to consistent rain in the mountains.
“That could bring more floods to the Amajuba District. We cannot confirm if and when, but we must be prepared,”said Newcastle 911 Community spokesperson, Johan Pieters.
However, a source has claimed one of the sluice gates was jammed open.
“The sluice gates were apparently opened on Wednesday, February 22, and when officials tried to close it, it was discovered that one of the gates would not close. So, whatever water we were trying to hold, is simply flowing out.”

According to Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi, who received feedback from the National Department, this was not the case.
“Two sluice gates have been opened,” he confirmed.
“This is to ensure water levels are not too much for the dam. The water will flow into the Ncandu and Buffalo Rivers, and will not flood Newcastle.”
Cllr Nkosi also said none of the sluice gates were broken.
“The gates were operated manually and not automatically, which would assure minimal breakage.”
With residents still affected, Mr Pieters is appealing to companies and individuals to assist families, by donating tin food.
The donations can be dropped off at the Red Cross, or contact the Newcastle 911 Community Police’s control room or send a WhatsApp message to Mr Pieters on 082 923 0078.
