Sarel learners build bridges and impress

One of the Grade 11's team was placed 3rd.

Sarel Cilliers competed in the annual bridge building competition organised by SAICE (South African Institute of Civil Engineers and this is one of the bridge made by the students.

On Thursday, Sarel Cilliers travelled to Harrismith for the annual bridge building competition organised by SAICE (South African Institute of Civil Engineers). Three teams from Sarel Cilliers High took part this year. In total there were 34 teams in the competition. Their teams consisted of a team from Gr 10 and two teams from Gr 11. The learners did very well and ended up in the following order:
Sarel’s team from Gr 10 (W Husselman, K Basson and L Mbuyisa) was placed 13th. One Gr 11 team (W du Plooy, X Buthelezi and R Kukard) was placed 7th and the other Gr 11 team consisting of D Ramdayal, R Rass and N Nyembe, was placed 3rd. Well done!!

Spar Hockey Tournament
On Friday, Sarel’s first hockey team travelled to Pongola to take part in the SPAR hockey tournament. They had a fun concert that evening and spent time getting to know the girls from the other teams.
Saturday they awoke to a misty morning, but fortunately the weather cleared and became a perfect day for an exciting tournament. Of the four matches played, they won 3: they beat Vryheid High 1-0, and Newcastle High 3-0 and drew 0-0 against Pionier. Unfortunately, Sarel lost their fourth match 0-3 against Ferrum. That meant that they did not go through to the semi-final. Thank you to all coaches who travelled with the teams and the school for their support.

KZN athletics
Four of Sarel’s athletes attended the KZN Athletics Trials this weekend. Sadly they did not bring any medals home, but the athletes tried really hard to do their best. Sandile Zitha had an injury and had to pull out of the 100m and 100m hurdles races. The school wished him a speedy recovery. The athletes have been invited to participate at the Federation Games on 10-12 March in Durban. Good luck! The athletes and Mrs Heroux wish to thank Mr Van Staden for his unwavering support and Mr Van Der Westhuizen for all the arrangements.
